What are the some of the main things that you hope readers will take away from the book? When he is open and willing to discuss things related to queer sex, its because his goal is to make it not-awkward or dirty in some way. When Goodman came in for his first day as a writer on season 5 of Big Mouth, he says, There was already talk about introducing these two new characters, the Lovebugs, and the concept that we would meet them in season 5 and they would take us into this spinoff. But even as they started fleshing out these new creatures, Goodman had no idea he would get the chance to actually play one of them. I hope that TV and film will recognize and honor the fact that Black people, queer people, POC, and women are beyond capable of telling our own stories and that audiences are hungry for it. So there's this thing - right? Is it a responsibility that you have to respond to some of the more hateful stuff out there? But I think its a little heavier in one of these episodes. It also targets our young people, giving them adult sentences. Hey, [expletive]. I'm writing on the show and also voicing a new creature named Walter, and all I can tell you is I adore Walter. He talks about this from time to time online and when he is in . They grew up in a religious immigrant household, and they know all too well what it's like to hide, to hide the most meaningful parts of yourself. He is working on it with diligence and passion, and he is so excited about it. She said, oh, well, if I ever see you in a movie, I'm going to point and say, he can't drive. You share that early on, before you felt rejected for your race, before you felt rejected for your sexual orientation, you were rejected for your femininity and for not acting like a boy. If I think about 20, 30, 40 years ago, there were white comedians saying things that were quite inappropriate, that were harmful, that we wouldnt say, Oh, well, thats just a joke. Today, wed be like, No, that was fucking racist. So the same is true today when were talking about gender and sexuality and these things that may be newer to some people, where we get to say, No, thats actually quite harmful and not funny. It doesnt mean that youre not funny, it doesnt mean that youre a terrible comedian now. GOODMAN: Yeah. No, shes just a sister in this family going through something with her grandmother and that, to me, is the ideal. Television has not always been an affirming place for Black queer voices, but Brandon Kyle Goodman is changing that one punch line at a time. And I was very grateful that I had these pages in my hands. You know, I think that as a kid, when you're, like, you know, 2, 3 and you're just playing, people kind of let you do whatever you want. I think a lot of times queer writers, Black writers, women when were the only one in a room get written off as not being good enough, but no one ever talks about, Well, have they been mentored?
