You dont expect rookie offensive linemen to come into the NFL and play the way Michael Onwenu did for the Patriots, especially rookie guards who were selected in the sixth round and forced into a starting job at tackle. Like rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence, this is a unit that wasnt being helped by the scheme and situation around them, so the potential for quick improvement in 2022 is real. 1 heading into 2022. The Eagles will hope that 2021 brings some more stability, giving whoever is back at quarterback for the offense a few more clean pockets to work from. Taylor Moton has played more than 1,000 snaps and earned a 76.0-plus PFF grade in four straight seasons. The biggest contributors were at least average with the exception of Sam Mustipher, whose 51.8 PFF grade was the lowest of the starters. Tretter | 79.4 Brandon Knight and Terence Steele especially struggled to hold up, as both allowed pressure rates north of 7% for the season. The Steelers offensive line has been an interesting case this season. Taylor Moton earned a 77.8 PFF grade and was one of the better right tackles in the NFL, but he was the only one of 11 linemen to end with a grade above 67.0. The Chiefs replacing their entire starting offensive line heading into the season and having it work out as well as it has is one of the most impressive personnel feats in the league. While Collins still comfortably outgraded him in 2021, Steele earned an admirable 64.6 overall mark in only his second season after entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent. Eleven different offensive linemen played at least 50 snaps for Philadelphia this season. Its the highest single-season grade PFF has ever given to an offensive lineman, and the next best marks belong to Hall of Famers Jonathan Ogden and Joe Thomas. As you could guess for a team coming in at second to last on this list, Thomas wasnt the only problem up front for the Giants. Few things are more important to a teams success than the quality of its offensive line. Other Ravens left tackles allowed six sacks combined. RT Jawaan Taylor | 60.3. With multiple other offensive line positions in flux, having the left side solidified would go a long way for Tennessee. The Titans as a whole were a much better run-blocking than pass-blocking group; there was not a single starter on the Tennessee offensive line that recorded a higher pass-blocking than run-blocking PFF grade. The biggest surprise on the line, though, was the man to Conklins left Wyatt Teller at right guard. Even without Derrick Henry, the unit was still opening up significant run lanes, and some of the issues in pass protection came from the Titans running out of healthy bodies at receiver. That one good tackle is former fourth overall pick Andrew Thomas, although Evan Neal is a promising rookie. Trai Turner had a better individual grade in both categories (84.5 for pass, 67.4 for run). Andrew Whitworth now 40 years old was arguably the best pass-blocking left tackle in the NFL this season. Over that four-year stretch, Armsteads pressure rate allowed of 3.7% is tied for the best mark at left tackle, and Ramczyks rate of 4.0% sits in third at the right tackle position among players with at least 1,000 pass-blocking snaps. PFF has him as their 58th best prospect and second-best guard. Its scary to think that the Jaguars fielded one of the worst offensive lines in the league last year and then lost their best lineman to retirement this offseason in center Brandon Linder. With just 24 penalties all season, this was the least penalized offensive line in football during the regular season. At least, they were supposed to be better in theory thats not what played out on the field. He earned an 87.3 pass-blocking grade after getting. Philadelphia Eagles (No Change from Week 14) Projected Week 15 Starters: LT Jordan Mailata Matt Pryor was similarly impressive in limited playing time, posting a 76.5 overall grade on 438 snaps at mostly right tackle last season. Right tackle Lane Johnson and center Jason Kelce are arguably the two best players at their positions in the NFL, while Jordan Mailata is a top-10 offensive tackle. Chris Lindstrom was a borderline All-Pro at right guard, but three-fifths of the starting line earned pass-blocking grades of 53.3 or lower. His 40% forced incompletion rate in 2022 led all Power Five cornerbacks. RG Jon Runyan Its a group that could use an injection of youth and talent this offseason. RG Cesar Ruiz | 57.9 We cant be that quick to normalize greatness, though. Its something that the Chiefs will gladly live with because of the plays that Mahomes can make and the way he avoids negative plays, but its something to keep in mind when evaluating the offensive line. He allowed 11 pressures across 460 pass-blocking snaps. He was also penalized nine times and recorded a lowly 27.6 pass-blocking grade. Its to be expected that an offensive line running out three rookies particularly ones who were considered projects like Jackson was would take their lumps early on, and the Dolphins have. His size and athleticism allow him to do things in the run game that most tackles simply cant, and that was apparent again in San Francisco this season despite all the injuries they suffered. The Chiefs offensive line can be made out to look worse than it is in pass protection because of the way Patrick Mahomes plays the position and the deeper drops he takes. They didnt throw a lot of high-value resources at the offensive line, but they did take a fair amount of chances on players in free agency and continued to bring in guys who could contribute and eliminate areas of weakness. LG Michael Jordan | 50.8 While theres some reason for optimism for Chicago's two second-year tackles and the leaps they could make, that optimism isnt based on what they put on tape last year. Jonah Williams has been impressive at left tackle, earning a 77.9 PFF grade, even if he has a tendency to lose badly when he does lose (he has allowed eight sacks). Add to that the fact that Jonah Williams and Jackson Carman are both high draft picks on rookie deals who could develop in 2022, and its easy to see why hopes are high in Cincinnati. Christian Darrisaw of the Minnesota Vikings takes the top spot with a grade of 89.8. 1. LT George Fant | 71.1 Jordan Mailata's incredible development at left tackle can't be understated. They ranked 19th in yards before contact per carry as a team (1.2), and Melvin Gordon III and Javonte Williams broke a combined 108 tackles on the season. The Cardinals had their share of issues along the interior of their offensive line, but considering where this group was coming from back in the 2018 season one of the worst offensive lines in recent memory a 12th-place finish here doesnt look all that bad. The dynamics did shift a little with those injuries. No one player highlights the group's adaptability more than Elgton Jenkins, who saw at least 25 snaps at his natural left guard position, center, left tackle and right tackle this season while still grading at an above-average level overall. Those improvements paled in comparison to Rob Havensteins jump from a 50.9 PFF grade in 2019 to 80.0 heading into this years postseason. Corey Linsley and Matt Feiler were massive upgrades in free agency, leaving the team with just a weak link at right tackle once Bryan Bulaga went down 45 snaps into the season. RT Trent Brown | 78.3. The, Trent Williams finished the year with the best PFF grade (98.3) in the NFL at any position. LT Dan Moore Jr. | 57.4 It would not be surprising to see the Bears address the interior line this offseason, either. LG Kevin Dotson | 64.5 After not playing a snap in his first two NFL seasons, Mailata went from spot starter at left tackle in 2020 to the third-highest-graded player at the position in the NFL last season. Shaq Mason at right guard was back to being one of the best run-blocking players in the league, allowing 15 pressures in 15 games. C Rodney Hudson | 60.3 It was difficult to be 100% certain about what Trent Williams would look like after the injuries and time off, but he quickly made it clear that this was still the same guy who was perennially in the conversation for being the best left tackle in the NFL. C Justin Britt | 64.5 Unfortunately for the Packers, Jenkins may have to be called on once again to play out of position at left tackle for the injured David Bakhtiari in the postseason. LG Quinton Spain | 72.3 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson (65), guard Isaac Seumalo (56) and center Jason Kelce (62) against the Green Bay Packers at Lincoln Financial Field. If Samuel Cosmi can build upon his 74.9 overall grade as a rookie, Washington will have itself a solid tackle duo. He allowed 16 pressures across 15 games while protecting Matthew Staffords blindside, and the team had a great bookend on the other side with Rob Havenstein playing some of his best football. 2021 Offensive Line Rankings Let's take a look at how the offensive lines around the NFL have fared so far through the 2021 NFL season. Each starter played at least 1,036 of a possible 1,182 snaps over the season, with Ali Marpet the only one to miss a game. Thomas' abysmal rookie season is still ingrained in a lot of minds, but many missed him become one of the best pass-protecting tackles in the league last year. LT Taylor Lewan | 71.4 Calvin Throckmorton played 938 snaps and earned a 43.4 PFF grade at guard, and Terron Armstead the unit's best player played in only eight games due to injury. All five of the 49ers' starters earned overall grades of 62.2 or higher, and the unit was forced to perform without right tackle Mike McGlinchey for nine games. C Erik McCoy | 64.2 The unit was heavily protected by that quick time to throw, which limited how exposed it was to rushers. In 2021, the Jets' five starting offensive linemen all earned above-average overall PFF grades, and the unit as a whole was ranked 11th in the league, above the Indianapolis Colts and Detroit. Wirfs' 82.2 PFF grade ranks second at the right tackle position, and he has proven himself against some of the best edge defenders in the league a list that includes the likes of Cameron Jordan, Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa. A good example of that is right tackle Daryl Williams, who earned a 79.4 grade for Buffalo this season. Carter played 392 snaps in 2022 and earned a 92.3 PFF grade that led all Power Five interior defenders.
